This body of work by Kim, “Conformity and Desire: Reflections on the Human Condition”, explores the nuanced relationship between personal desires and societal structures. The works explore the tension between individuality and societal expectations, and the narratives we consume which shape our identities and relationships. By juxtaposing themes of intimacy with those of control and productivity, the series critiques how capitalist frameworks manipulate human connections, reducing complex emotional experiences to mere transactions. Challenging the herd mentality, the collection invites an examination of the sacrifices made to conform, and a re-evaluation of true connection in a world driven by capitalist imperatives.

Nadia Marychuch

  • Whangai, Nadia Marychurch

    ‘Whāngai #1’, 2025

Whenua-dipped woollen blankets, muka stitching and pounamu.
    1100 x 250mm
Whāngai: (verb) (-a,-hia,-nga,-tia) to feed, nourish, bring up, foster, adopt, raise, nurture, rear.

Many māori whānau in Aotearoa welcome children into their home as their own (usually a niece, nephew, or grandchild) This is called whāngai. Growing up as a Whāngai (during various points in my life) you can often feel like an extra or even discarded. But that's simply not true. This work is made up of discarded pieces from larger works. With this series called ‘whāngai’ I aim to show that there is great value in all of us, even when it doesn't feel like it.
